Texas Education Freedom Accounts moved fast — faster than most families expected. This page keeps score: what's confirmed, what's pending, and what it means for homeschooling with the program's $2,000 per child.

The program is live

Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) launched for the 2026–27 school year, administered by the Texas Comptroller with Odyssey as the payment platform. Year-one applications closed March 31, 2026.

Homeschool funding: $2,000 per child, per year

Homeschooled students receive $2,000 annually — deposited in full on July 1, 2026 for awarded families. Students at participating private schools receive $10,474; some students with disabilities may receive up to $30,000.

Online curriculum is an approved expense

Tuition and fees for online educational courses or programs are approved, when the provider is enrolled in the program's marketplace. The program's own FAQ confirms online and out-of-state providers qualify once approved.

Vendor enrollment is open, on a rolling basis

Providers and vendors can apply at any time through the Odyssey vendor portal. Approved vendors appear in the official directory.

Homeschoolers stay homeschoolers

Unlike some states' programs, accepting TEFA funds does not change a Texas homeschool family's legal status — homeschools operate as private schools either way, with no notice, hours, or testing requirements.
